Tackling the Hard Topics--Social Justice in Children's Books

Books widen our world. Sometimes they draw our attention to things that need to change. Authors Kathy Kacer, Judie Oron and Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch have made a difference with their books by tackling difficult subjects.

In December, these three authors will show us the hope that's found in hard places. Join us to hear what drew them to write these stories, how they brought the experiences alive, and how the books have been received. Moderator: Bill Swan

Judie Oron is a Canadian/Israeli journalist, author and lecturer. Her novel, 'Cry of the Giraffe: Based on a True Story,' (Annick Press) follows the experience of her Ethiopian Jewish daughter Wuditu's years in slavery, until the author went to war torn Ethiopia to search for her and release her from captivity. Since publication, Judie has spoken in both Hebrew and English, in Canada, Israel, the US and the UK on Wuditu's story and on the plight of child slaves in the Horn of Africa.

Kathy Kacer is a multi-award winning author who has written seventeen books all focusing on stories of the Second World War and the Holocaust. Her books have been translated into more than 20 languages and she is a much sought after speaker in school, libraries, and universities around the world. Inspired by true events, her novels are stories of hope, courage, and humanity in the face of overwhelming adversity.

Most of Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch's 18 books for children and young adults explore those bits of history that have been either ignored or misrepresented. Her works have received many awards and honours, most recently, the 2013 Silver Birch fiction award for Making Bombs for Hitler, and the BC Red Cedar Information Book award for Last Airlift: A Vietnamese Orphan's Rescue from War.
