The first CANSCAIP logo was an illustration by Alan Daniel. He was one of the eleven who met at the Port Colborne Literary Festival in 1976 and decided to form a children’s organization similar to TWUC which was quite new then as well. The story is that Claire came up with the name as they sat around a table after dinner, and Alan tossed off the logo on a napkin. Alan was a CANSCAIP Member for a number of years. Among the many, many books he illustrated was Janet Lunn’s The Story of Canada. |

Our logo as it appears on this website was designed by Member Mary Cserepy in the 1980s and modified by Mark Thurman not long after. Mary illustrated the covers of such classics as One Proud Summer by Claire Mackay (founding member), Hold Fast by Kevin Major (if not the first Canadian ya novel, it was certainly an early one), and Death Over Montreal by Geoffrey Bilson (in whose honour the TD Historical Fiction Award is named). No longer a CANSCAIP Member, Mary continues her work as a fine artist. Mark Thurman is the illustrator, and author-illustrator, of many books. He illustrated Owl magazine’s long-running “Mighty Mites” comic series, and, still a CANSCAIP member, he teaches at Sheridan College. Mark solicited variations of CANSCAIP logos which were used to create a poster for CANSCAIP’s first art show. They were then used to create postcards, which for a time were a big seller. |
