Bio
Barbara Greenwood was born, grew up and has always lived in Toronto. Her interest in the history of her home town led to the writing of her first published novel, A Question of Loyalty, which is set during the Rebellion of 1837. This title is used in many Grade 7 and 8 classrooms.

She now has 15 published titles including A Pioneer Story: The Daily Life of a Canadian Family in 1840, which won the Ruth Schwartz Award, the Mr. Christie’s Book Award and the Children’s Literature Roundtables’ Information Book Award.

The Last Safe House: A Tale of the Underground Railroad won the Roundtables’ Information Book Award and has appeared on many “Best of…” lists including the Smithsonian Magazine’s Best Books of the Year List. Her other titles have been shortlisted for various Readers’ Choice Awards.

Among her other books are Gold Rush Fever: A Story of the Yukon, The Kids Book of Canada, and several sequels to a Pioneer Story. Her most recent book is Factory Girl: A Story of Child Labour in 1912.

In her many school and library visits Barbara has used her storytelling skills to bring Canadian history alive for today’s students.

Barbara is also an experienced editor and teacher of creative writing. She taught Writing for the Children’s Market at Ryerson University for twenty years as well as a Master Level course for five years. She has conducted Writing Workshops at Arts Centres across the country, is an experienced conference speaker and book reviewer.

Before becoming a full-time writer, Barbara completed a B.A. at the University of Toronto, taught elementary school and raised four children.
